Candida albicans can become one of the most dangerous fungi within the body when it starts exceeding its numbers uncontrollably, which in-turn brings about disastrous yeast infections, creating several health issues within the body.
This fungus when in controlled numbers is actually good for the body and health when residing in the intestines and digestive tract. In fact, when in adequate number, it helps in the absorption of nutrients and digestive system to function better. However, situations become hazardous once the number of Candida fungi exceeds the optimum level. When the concentration of Candida yeast increases in the body, it destroys the linings of the intestines and hampers the bloodstream. In such situations, it becomes vital to follow a Candida overgrowth diet for a generous period of time.
Why Does Candida Overgrowth Occur?
The fine balance of the Candida fungi is preserved by the numerous other friendly bacteria present within our system. However, under certain circumstances these friendly bacteria can diminish causing an innumerable number of health issues. So let us check out some of the basic reasons which give rise to the overgrowth of Candida albicans:
High carbohydrate diet and eating loads of sugar-loaded items can increase the growth of Candida.
Depression and high stress levels
Consuming foods with lots of preservatives like pickles, kombucha, and sauerkraut and so on.
Consumption of antibiotics at a high dose or it’s prolonged use, which can cause destruction of the good bacteria living in the body that control the Candida levels.
In-take of oral contraceptive pills.
The above are just a few circumstances when the need for a Candida overgrowth diet becomes irreplaceable.
Testing for Candida Overgrowth
If you are not sure whether you are affected with Candida or something else, then here are certain things you might want to know. One of the first things you can do is a blood test which will reflect the amount of antibodies like IgG, IgM and IgA present in your body. Higher levels of these Candida antibodies indicate greater inclination towards the expansion of Candida albicans. However, only blood tests may not be enough at times, and therefore a stool test becomes the next best option. These tests not only determine the presence of the fungus and its area of infestation, but also provide the best remedy suited.
Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth
Other than laboratory tests, there are certain symptoms which your body outbreaks in order to inform you about your health crisis. Fungal nail and skin infections are one of the most common signs. Symptoms include frequent feeling of exhaustion, frail memory, lack of concentration, flare-ups of eczema, hives, psoriasis, mood swings, depression, anxiety, vaginal infections with white discharge, itching, rashes and sugar cravings.
What is a Good Candida Overgrowth Diet to Follow?
When our body’s friendly bacteria that prevent the growth of Candida decline, then Candida overgrowth starts to take place, making the life miserable. In order to better the situation, a Candida overgrowth diet needs to be followed strictly. This definitely strikes off the use of ‘Sugar’ from one’s intake list. Any form of sugar, in any manner is hazardous for the host body suffering from Candida overgrowth, as it tremendously triggers the growth of yeast cells to multiply rapidly. For the first phase of the treatment, the amount of carbohydrate is generally reduced to 60 grams per day. This intake is variable depending upon age, sex, health and activities performed on a regular basis. Non-starch vegetables, nuts, seeds, low sugar fruits, and sweeter instead of sugar are the most suitable for a good Candida overgrowth diet. Along with this, try and avoid fermented food and drink products like alcohol, breads, and any kind of condiments with preservatives, mushrooms, cheese and margarine.
In 2014, a study was conducted in the ‘Journal of Prosthodontics’ to determine the effect of apple cider vinegar on Candida in patients suffering from denture stomatitis. The microdilution technique was used in this investigation in order to quantify the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration as well as the Minimum Fungicidal Concentration. At regular intervals microbial kinetic test was conducted by examining varying concentrations of MIC, MIC*2 and MIC*4. A roughness indicator was utilised in order to determine the degree of surface unevenness and colour changing properties of acrylic resin samples. The results exposed that apple cider vinegar of about 4% showed good antifungal abilities to destroy the Candida overgrowth within the mouth, and can be used for treating patients affected with Candida yeast infections. So, apple cider vinegar should definitely be included into the diet of a Candida overgrowth diet. For best results, try to consume 2 tablespoons of (diluted) raw apple cider vinegar which is unfiltered, each day in your foods and beverages.
Due to the increased effect of Candida in human beings, there has been a growing need for discovering newer and better antifungal diagnosis for faster recovery, and in the ‘Medical Mycology Impact Factor Journal’, an investigation looked into the beneficial properties of honey against Candida. This investigation showed that floral honey turned out to be a fighter against the different Candida species like: Candida albicans, and Candida glabrata. The properties of floral honey were found to be more helpful than those available in the drugstores. However, for Candida dubliniensis, only Jarrah honey solely worked far better than any other. This findings of this study point out the great benefits of floral honey and Jarrah honey in fighting Candida overgrowth, but one must avoid artificial honey’s as it doesn’t provide the same benefits. (see table below)
These findings may be due to the high antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of Jarrah honey and also because of the high levels of hydrogen peroxide inside it.
One may also try ‘Organic Raw Honey’ as well, consume a teaspoon of this honey twice a day. Also in-cooperate some apple cider vinegar into your diet for best results.
For the complete removal of the Candida infection, it is important to create a situation by following a Candida overgrowth diet which is not at all friendly for the fungus to thrive in. Stopping further growth of this fungus is very important, and can be done by maintaining good hygiene and healthy diet. One must completely avoid sugar and alcohol for a Candida yeast infection free life. Cutting off the excess of refined carbohydrates is also necessary. Besides all this, sleep well and keep all your stresses farther away from your mind.
