A 2011 study in the ‘Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry’ looked at the effects of cranberry integrated broth with a minimum concentration of 1 μg/mL on the Candida species. It was discovered that the cranberry broth had strongly reduced the growth of 4 Candida species including: Candida lusitaniae, Candida glabrata, Candida Krusei and Cryptococcus, as well as Cryptococcus neoformans. The study adequately reflects that cranberry’s act as antifungal agents which can help eradicate or diminish the effect of Candida yeast.


In the ‘Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy’ there was another study about the effectiveness of cranberry’s in preventing Candida albicans. It also found that nosocomial urinary tract infection is caused by Candida albicans which had resulted in increased medication costs in some patients, so there was a urgent requirement for the solution to this infection. The biofilms of this yeast was coagulated with cranberry in faux urine and the metabolic activity was examined using the XTT ‘cell viability assay’ in silicone disc models and static microplate. When cranberry was supplemented with iron, it decreased the efficacy of cranberry PAC. The cranberry juice derived proanthocyanidin with a concentration of >16mg/L showed a reduction of the biofilm of Candida albicans adherence in the samples of both polystyrene and silicone. As shown in biofilms samples, the higher the concentration of cranberry juice, the lesser the amount of Candida growth. From the samples tested, it was clear that the concentration of 1024 mg/L of cranberry juice had shown the best results.

The finding of this study proved that cranberry juice can be effective in assisting to fight off Candida yeast infections. However, it’s important to drink pure cranberry juice rather than diluted juices, as the concentration of cranberry’s in pure juices will be higher, which will benefit the drinker with its antifungal properties more. Another interesting finding of the study was that the use of ‘iron supplements’ had shown an increased growth of the Candida albican species in patients, so it is advisable to stop the intake of iron supplements whilst treating a yeast infection. Along with cranberry juice yeast infection can be prevented if our diet plan is modified and it will contain fewer amounts of carbohydrates, caffeine, and yeast included substances like bakes and breads and other sugary products. As these foods can increase the level of the fungus in our body and can lead to yeast infection.
