Research on Tea Tree & Thymus Pulegioides Oil

A study aiming to study the in-vitro activity of tea tree oil and its products on Candida spp. was published by the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.  This study showed as to how effective was tea tree oil among essential oils for Candida. It stated that in comparison to other essential oils like sandalwood, tea tree was seen to have higher inhibiting effect on Candida albicans. Total 57 isolates of Candida was tested among which 90% were inhibited with tea tree oil. This study showed that tea tree oil actively inhibited Candida on topical application.

Another study published by Microbiology Society in 2006 hoped to find the anti-fungal effects of Thymus pulegioides oil on three different pathogens, namely dermatophyte species, aspergillus and Candida. It stated that this essential oil due to its lesion forming activity in the cytoplasmic membrane as well as the significant reduction in ergosterol content has a great effect on the fungi. It does state that the Thymus pulegioides essential oil does have its anti-fungal properties, but it also requires further investigation.
